Brunton House & Cottages is a collection of 5* Gold luxury self-catering cottages on the Fallodon Estate, around 9 miles south of Bamburgh. From the cottages you can see across the fields to the sea at Beadnell Bay, and Bamburgh Castle, Seahouses and the Farne Islands are all a short drive away.

Bamburgh Castle

Once the royal capital of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria, Bamburgh Castle towers over one of the finest beaches in the country. Inside you’ll find the King’s Hall, the State Rooms, and the Armstrong and Aviation Museum.

Dogs on leads are welcome in the castle grounds, the Armstrong and Aviation Museum and the Victorian Stables bar, which makes it one of the most dog-friendly castles in Northumberland. The castle is open at weekends through the winter, and its Christmas installation is a highlight of the season. Check opening times before you visit.

Bamburgh Village

Below the castle, the village is small but full of history. In St Aidan’s Church, the “Bamburgh Bones” crypt holds some of the region’s earliest Christian burials, and Grace Darling, the lighthouse keeper’s daughter who rowed out to rescue shipwrecked sailors in 1838, is buried in the churchyard. Across the road, the RNLI Grace Darling Museum tells her story, which is a good option on a wet day.

Beaches and Dog Walks

Bamburgh Beach stretches for miles beneath the castle walls, with Budle Bay a little further north. Closer to home, Beadnell Bay is the nearest beach to Brunton, and its harbour is the only west-facing harbour on England’s east coast, popular for sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Seahouses and the Farne Islands

Just south of Bamburgh, the fishing village of Seahouses is where boat trips leave for the Farne Islands, home to puffins, grey seals and St Cuthbert’s Chapel. Keep an eye out at sea too, as orcas and dolphins have been spotted off this stretch of coast.
