Discover the Farne Islands
The Farne Islands – a stunning archipelago of some 15–20 granite and basalt isles off the Northumberland coast. With views back over the sandy beaches, to Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Holy Island castles, and the Cheviots in the distance. The grounds are steeped in history and bursting with wildlife. Just a few miles from Seahouses, they’ve been a place of mystery and refuge for centuries. Saint Cuthbert came here, seeking solitude and establishing early conservation efforts – Cuthbert ordained that eider ducks and other seabirds were protected, creating one of the earliest bird-protection laws in the world. He died on Inner Farne in 687 AD, and you can still visit St Cuthbert’s Chapel today, a simple yet atmospheric building.
In 1838, the islands entered British folklore thanks to Grace Darling, the lighthouse keeper’s daughter. Braving stormy seas from Longstone Lighthouse, she and her father rescued nine shipwrecked survivors, a heroic act still commemorated today on guided boat trips.
A Birdwatcher’s Paradise

From April to September, the Farnes become one of the UK’s greatest seabird breeding grounds. Over 200,000 seabirds nest here, including:
- Puffins – around 36,000 pairs; their colourful beaks and awkward waddle are irresistible.
- Guillemots – tens of thousands cram the cliffs.
- Razorbills, Shags, Cormorants, Fulmars, and Eider ducks all find nesting spots among the rocks.
- Sandwich, Common, Arctic, and occasionally the rare Roseate Terns dash overhead.
The breeding season peaks in May–July. Glide into the archipelago and you’ll hear the cacophony of squawking terns and see puffins bringing back sand eels for their chicks. Visiting just after dawn or before dusk offers breathtaking cliffside vantage and soft golden light that brings the wildlife to life.
