Brunton’s guide to the best local food producers

Nestled in the heart of the stunning Northumberland countryside, Brunton Cottages not only offer a tranquil escape but also provide a gateway to a world of local culinary delights.

Forget impersonal supermarket aisles – we’re about to immerse you in a vibrant tapestry of Northumberland’s finest food producers.

In this guide, we’ll take you on a gastronomic journey through some of the best local food producers, ensuring that your stay at Brunton Cottages is not just a retreat but a celebration of the region’s vibrant flavours.

Ad Gefrin

What better way to start your culinary exploration than with a sip of Tacnbora? A blended whisky from the exciting new whisky distillers in Wooler who have also created an Anglo Saxon Museum, exhibitions, distillery tours and tastings, and a bistro and bar.  Paired with the historical significance of the site of Ad Gefrin, the ancient royal seat of the Northumbrian kingdom, this unique blend of tradition and innovation sets the stage for an unforgettable experience.  Try their Flyte, a whisky cream liqueur, to help you melt into the history.

Turnbulls Butchers

For a true taste of the Northumberland countryside, indulge in the finest meats from Turnbulls Butchers. Sourcing their products from farms just a few miles from Brunton, Turnbulls ensures that every cut is a testament to the region’s commitment to quality and sustainability.

Northumberland Cheese

Northumberland Cheese deserves standing ovations. Sample creamy Brie de Meaux, earthy Perl Las, or the tangy bite of a Cheviot Cheddar – your taste buds will be forever grateful.

Doddington Dairy

Fresh milk, creamy yoghurt, and decadent ice cream – Doddington Dairy is a haven for dairy dreamers. Their clotted cream will leave you wanting for more.

Get a Taste of the Local Delights

At Brunton Cottages, we proudly support a variety of local food producers, showcasing the diversity of Northumberland’s culinary landscape.

From the earthy flavours of Buston Farm Potatoes to the golden richness of Seabanks Rapeseed Oil, fresh fruits and vegetables from Christmas Farms, and the authentic taste of Northumberland Pantry – each producer contributes a unique flavour to the region’s gastronomic tapestry.

Sweet Endings and Artisanal Brews

Indulge your sweet tooth with treats from Trotters Bakers and Proof of the Pudding, or savour the rich, robust flavours of Pilgrims Coffee. Alnwick Brewery adds a hoppy touch to the mix, while Fentimans and Lindisfarne Mead offer refreshing and traditional beverages to accompany your culinary journey.

Stories to Savour

Marlish Water’s story of environmental consciousness and community spirit is as refreshing as their bottled spring water. Hepple Gin, too, is a masterclass in sustainable practices, their botanicals reflecting the terroir they call home. Crafted with care and precision, Hepple Gin is a local gem that captures the essence of Northumberland. These are producers who go the extra mile – and it shows in every delicious drop.

More than Just a Meal

When you choose Brunton Cottages, you’re choosing to support local heroes who pour their hearts and souls into nourishing bodies and spirits. And a taste of that dedication awaits in our welcome basket, featuring Chainbridge Honey from hives buzzing right here on our fields, Seabanks Rapeseed Oil to elevate your cooking, and Bread and Roses loaves baked with artisanal magic.

The Village Shop

The excellent Embleton Village Shop stocks all your normal goods and newspapers at prices comparable to the supermarkets, and it also has meat from their farm, Embleton Mill, supplies from other local food producers, special treats, fabulous bread, and pates and dried meat – plus a post office.  It is 3 miles from Brunton, on the way to the beach, and we cannot recommend it enough. Do make the most of it for a full family shop for the week, or just a delicious picnic.
