Brunton’s Guide to Outside Play Areas for Children under 10
As a family-friendly destination, we at Brunton Cottages know that keeping the little ones entertained is key to a happy and relaxing break. Luckily, our beautiful corner of Northumberland is bursting with fantastic outside play areas perfect for children under 10.
On a dry day, why not ditch the plans and spend quality time with your mini-adventurers? We’ve got the inside scoop on the best spots to get you started.
Embleton Village Play Area
Just a short drive away from us is the charming village of Embleton, boasting a delightful play area which is perfect for a spontaneous outing. With swings, slides, and climbing frames, there’s something for everyone.
And the best part? The village shop is a quick stroll away, making it easy to grab a picnic lunch and enjoy the outdoors. Plus, there are toilets in the nearby church hall, so you don’t have to worry about any unexpected bathroom emergencies.
Get Ready for a Magical Experience at Lilidore
For a more adventurous day out, head to Lilidore in Alnwick. This fantastic facility offers something for every age and interest. There are climbing walls, winding slides, zip lines, rope bridges and even a miniature railway. It’s a great place to spend a few hours exploring and having fun.
The attention to detail is stunning, with each area themed around mythical creatures and stories. We particularly love the sensory gardens and the interactive elements that bring the whole experience to life. It’s worth noting that while Lilidore can be enjoyed year-round, it truly comes alive during the festive season with special Christmas events.
Head to Craster for a Seaside Adventure
If you’re planning a trip to the picturesque fishing village of Craster (famous for its kippers!), don’t miss out on their lovely play park. The play park is located on the seafront, offering stunning views and plenty of fresh air. Kids can enjoy swings, slides, and climbing frames while taking in the beautiful scenery.
Visit Clarty Commandos for Some Muddy Fun
For families with slightly older children or those who love a bit of mud and adventure, we highly recommend Clarty Commandos in Howick Woods. This unique outdoor experience offers children the chance to connect with nature and challenge themselves in a safe environment.
From den building to rope swings and obstacle courses, Clarty Commandos encourages children to push their boundaries and have fun getting, well, clarty! (That’s Northumbrian for muddy, by the way!) It’s a fantastic way to spend a few hours, and we always hear great feedback from families who’ve tried it.
Fun for All Ages with Mini Golf at Seahouses
For a fun, laid-back afternoon, we recommend mini golf at Seahouses. The course is well-designed and offers just the right level of challenge for children under 10. Plus, with its location in Seahouses, you can easily combine it with other activities like a boat trip to the Farne Islands or some fish and chips by the harbour.
