Accessibility Guide - Brunton Burn
This access statement does not contain personal opinions as to our suitability for those with access needs, but aims to accurately describe the facilities and services that we offer all our guests/visitors.
- Brunton Burn is an ideal location for a self-catering holiday, close to the Northumberland Heritage Coast. It is located at Brunton, an organic farm on the 2,500 acre Fallodon Estate. The nearest town is Alnwick, 8 miles to the south, and the village of Christon Bank, 1 mile away, has a basic village shop and post office.
- The cottage is a barn conversion, part of a group of buildings that formed the old mill at Brunton. The cottage looks on to the Brunton Burn on one side and into a gravel and grass courtyard on the other.
- There are 3 steps from the entrance and bedroom/bathroom end of the cottage and the open-plan sitting room and kitchen.
- The cottage sleeps 2 people. This website has photographs of all the rooms along with a further description.

- There is no regular bus service. If you are coming by train, Alnmouth is 9 miles away and there are taxis at the station.
- Detailed directions are available in this website, under the location tab. We are 8 miles north of Alnwick, between the A1 and the coast.
- There will be a generous arrival hamper awaiting you which includes some basic food, details of which are on the information section of the website. We are lucky to have several chefs who can prepare fabulous meals for you. Their contact details and sample menus are on the website. Finally, Tesco will deliver to the cottages. “This Access Statement or any section of the website can be made available in larger print, on request.
- The key to Brunton Burn will be left on the kitchen table on the day you arrive.
- Temporary drop off parking is available for 2 cars in the parking area at the entrance to the courtyard. It is approx 25m from the front door of Brunton Burn, across the gravel courtyard.
- The long term parking is at the end of the building off the road, it has motion sensor lights both in the car park and along the path to the front door. From the car-park there are 4 sandstone steps up to a sandstone path that leads to the cottage entrance. Alternatively for wheelchairs & pushchairs you can access the path, without requiring steps, from the road. The path is 1.2m wide.
- The front door is 800mm/32ins wide.
- There is 1 step into the house but no handrail. The entrance is lit by motion sensor lights.
- The floor covering inside the entrance is rhino matting a non slip entrance matting that is secured to the floor. There is an entrance hall to hang coats and leave dirty shoes and boots.
- The hall and passageway are well lit with ceiling lights as well as picture lights.
- The passageway to the open plan kitchen & sitting room is 1.17m wide and there are 3 steps down to it. The steps are 160mm/6.5ins high and 300mm/12ins wide.
- The floor covering is Karndine, a synthetic product that has the look and feel of an oak floor.
- The sitting room and kitchen are in one large open plan area that is accessed from the passageway that leads from the front door.
- The room has a sofa and two armchairs. There is a stool in front of the sofa and wood burner and coffee tables next to the seating. Furniture can be moved.
- There is a clearview wood burning stove at one end of the room with an ample supply of dry firewood and firelighters.
- There is a 43″ Samsung smart TV with remote control. There are also shelves with a large selection of books.
- There is excellent natural light from the very large glass windows (see the photos on the website) as well as a number of lamps and picture lights.
- The flooring is the same as the passageway, oak effect Karndine with rugs on top.
- There are French doors leading from the open plan area down onto the terrace. There are two steps down onto the sandstone terrace which has views over the river and fields to the sea. There is a hardwood table and chairs
- The dining room area is part of the open plan, with a table between the kitchen and sitting room. This is a large table and 4 chairs, with padded seats. The table has a hanging light over it. The chairs and table are moveable.
- The dining table (moveable side to side) is 710mm/28ins from floor to lowest point of table.
- There is free space around the table.
- Worktop and sink are 920mm/36ins above the floor.
- There is a fridge that is integrated into the units below the worktop. There is also a small box freezer in the utility cupboard in the passage.
- Large cutlery and utensils, cordless kettle rotating 360.
- The kitchen is evenly lit with halogen spotlights above work surfaces.
- Flooring is same as sitting room and passage, oak effect Karndine.
- There is bedroom with a large bathroom next door. The bedroom has zip and link beds to offer a double bed or two singles to guests.
- The door to the bedroom is 820mm/32.5ins wide.
- Furniture can be easily removed or rearranged.
- The height of the bed from the top of the mattress to the floor is 570mm/23ins.
- Lighting is natural daylight as well as over head lights. There are 2 bedside lamps each side of the bed.
- The bedroom offers good colour contrast between the floor, walls and doors, short pile carpet, feather and down pillows and duvets, digital television with remote control, subtitles, and audio description facilities.
- The bedroom has a dressing table with stool and mirror. There is ample hanging and storage space for clothes in a walk in cupboard.
- The bathroom has a bath and walk in large shower.
- Step free, level access.
- Door opening 820mm/32.5ins wide.
- There is a 50mm/2ins step into the shower.
- There is a horizontal handle on the bath
- Toilet 430mm/17ins high.
- Wash basin 820mm/32.5ins high.
- Traditional taps on the washbasin and bath.
- Well lit with overhead lights.
- The floor is the same oak effect carndine.
- These are in the passage between the bedroom and bathroom.
- There are slatted shelves above the hot water tank to air and dry clothes.
- There is a standard size washing machine and drier.
- The cupboard is lit by a single ceiling light.
- There is a sandstone terrace on the river side of the cottage which is accessed through the sliding French doors with 2 steps down.
- The terrace in enclosed with glass on two sides and a wall with plants and trellis on the third. The glass panels are 1m high. There is a hardwood table and chairs as well as BBQ.
- On the courtyard side of the house there is a gravel courtyard with a seat as well as a stand tap for washing boots or wetsuits. In the middle of the courtyard there is a 12m grass circle with a cherry tree in the middle and a stone bench.
- You are welcome to explore the surrounding area and there are details in the house file with suggested walks using the extensive tracks and footpaths on the estate.
- Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in Brunton Burn.
- All areas in the cottage have good colour contrast between the floor, doors and walls.
- The mobile phone reception is mixed inside the house, depending on operator.
- The nearest General Hospital with a minor injuries unit is 8 miles away in Alnwick and the nearest Doctors surgery is 2 miles away in Embleton. Further information is in the welcome folder.
