The festive season is here, and there’s no better place to soak up the magic of Christmas than in the North East. At Brunton Cottages, we absolutely love this time of year—it’s all about creating unforgettable memories with our loved ones. From enchanting light displays to festive markets and seasonal adventures, our region has so much to offer. Whether you’re staying with us for a cozy holiday escape or just looking for inspiration, here are some of the best Christmas activities to enjoy with your family.
Alnwick Garden Winter TrailThe Alnwick Garden transforms into a winter wonderland during the festive season, making it an unmissable stop for families. Wander through the magical Sparkle Trail, where thousands of twinkling lights illuminate the gardens in the most spectacular way. There’s something truly enchanting about seeing the Grand Cascade lit up against the winter sky. While you’re there, don’t forget to visit Father Christmas in his grotto and let the little ones enjoy some festive storytelling.
Wallington Hall Festive Fun

Wallington Hall is another firm favourite of ours during Christmas. This National Trust property offers a wonderful mix of history and seasonal cheer. Throughout December, Wallington hosts Christmas craft workshops and festive trails for children to explore. We particularly love the beautifully decorated house, complete with twinkling trees and roaring fires. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the charm of a traditional Christmas.Newcastle Christmas Markets
A trip to the Newcastle Christmas Markets is a must for families. The bustling stalls are filled with festive treats, handmade gifts, and local crafts—ideal for ticking off those Christmas shopping lists. For the kids, the highlight has to be the carousel rides and the chance to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows, of course!). The atmosphere is buzzing, and it’s impossible not to get swept up in the Christmas spirit.
Kielder Winter Wonderland

If you’re up for a bit of adventure, head to Kielder Winter Wonderland. This immersive experience brings the magic of Christmas to life with interactive performances, woodland trails, and even reindeer to meet! One of our favourite activities here is skating on the outdoor ice rink, surrounded by the stunning Kielder Forest. It’s a bit further afield but worth every mile for the memories you’ll make.
Cragside Christmas TreeA visit to the beautiful Cragside areas is a must at all time during the year, but especially at Christmas time, as visitors are treated to the UK’s tallest living Christmas tree! Standing at 42 metres tall, it’s twice the size of the lady of the North, is over 160 years old and is adorned with more than 3,200 feet of twinkling lights
Bamburgh Castle’s Christmas Kingdom
Closer to home, Bamburgh Castle embraces the festive season in style. This year’s Christmas Kingdom features dazzling decorations and unique displays throughout the castle’s rooms. We love how it captures the history and magic of the season all in one place. The views over the Northumberland coastline are breath-taking, especially on crisp winter days.
